How we overcame and killed lice naturally with Neem

The Neem Queen on Aug 1st 2016

For months, I kept seeing Facebook posts and reading articles on these poor households that were infested with lice. One child would come home from school, itching and scratching. The parents do a thorough check of the hair and their fears come true. LICE! In some cases they would get control of the lice immediately but in other cases, the whole house got infected. Sheets were washed daily, stuffed animals and toys were quarantined, brushes and hair ties destroyed and chemical shampoos had to be soaked into their hair and scalp. Sounded like a nightmare that I didn’t want any part of.

Did you know that US children miss 12 to 24 MILLION days of school each year due to lice?

Well, then one day it happened. The itching. The denial. Then the truth. Our daughter normally has a dry scalp so I assumed it was just irritated. When I asked to look at her hair, she assured me that it wasn’t lice. She had heard the horror stories and didn’t want to confirm my suspicions, hoping it would just go away. I eventually checked her hair and there it was, a full size adult lice with little white eggs scattered around. Instantly, I felt like things were crawling in my hair….if you have experienced a child with lice you know the feeling.

So how do you get lice? We are a clean house, bathe regularly and wash our hands. But lice don’t look at cleanliness, they just need a nice environment to live and propagate. Lice move from one head to another by sharing:

  • Brushes
  • Combs
  • Hats
  • Scarves
  • Ear muffs
  • Head bands
  • Hooded jackets and more

We immediately stripped the sheets, washed all laundry, boiled the hair brushes, sprayed lysol on the beds and couches. Next step was how do we kill them? I remember having these awful smelling chemical lice kits that would sting your eyes and nose. My mom would have to have plastic gloves on and would have to carefully rinse my hair so that it didn’t get in my eyes. I didn’t want that for my child, I wanted a natural remedy to kill lice.

First thing though, what do lice look like?  It's a seemingly simple question but I wanted to make sure I knew what to look for, below is a picture of what lice look like.

Fortunately for us, we had done a lot of research on how neem kills lice and how neem can be used to prevent you from getting lice. Neem has been used for years as a way of killing insects, pests and most importantly lice, nits and eggs. We were so excited to have an alternative to regular chemical lice removal systems and were immediately putting our research to use.

How did we remove lice using Neem? All About Neem has created an individual and family size lice kit with everything you need to clean and rid your hair of lice and nits. Each kit comes with the following items.

  • Neem Bark Herbal Lice Shampoo- This is a thick, medicated strength neem oil shampoo that is used first in the process. Generously apply the shampoo to the hair and scalp. Put the plastic shower cap over the hair and let sit for 10 minutes. Rinse.
  • Neem Bark Herbal Lice Conditioner- The Neem Oil Conditioner is the next step. After Shampoo has been rinsed out, add a quarter size or larger of the neem conditioner. Let sit for 2-3 minutes. This will detangle the hair and loosen the eggs and nits.
  • Body Guard Neem Bark Cleaning Bar- Use the Body Guard Neem Bark Bar soap to clean and scrub your body.
  • Neem Leaf Extract- Once we washed and conditioned the hair, our next step was to use the lice comb and very methodically comb through every section of her hair. After we cleared out a section, we sprayed her scalp with the neem leaf extract.
  • Neem Seed Oil- For really extreme lice infestations, you can directly apply neem seed oil to the scalp. We didn’t have a very bad problem so we instead would pour this into our regular shampoo and use it once or twice a week to prevent the lice from returning.
  • Plastic shower cap
  • Lice comb

We learned so much in this process but the main thing was to have patience because you will need it! Especially as you sit there combing through hair. And patience knowing that lice doesn’t just go away after the first treatment, with chemicals or without. This is a process where you must check daily, comb daily, clean daily and hopefully if you are lucky, be done with it completely in a couple of weeks time. We are just so thrilled that we could find a natural lice shampoo and lice kit option. Since then, we have a All About Neem Lice Kit on hand at all times and use the Neem Bark Herbal Shampoo once or twice a week at a minimum to keep those bugs away!
